International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 every year. Here is the link to the website of International Women’s Day 2008. In some countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 8 as well.
This event seems to originate from protests by women against exploitation at the workplace. It was first declared as a non-working day in the former USSR to recognise the contribution of Soviet women in building, defending and strengthening the former Soviet Union. It continues to be observed as a holiday in many former socialist countries, among others.
